For Students Interested in Pediatrics: Externships and Residencies that they might consider:
- Indianapolis Ascension St. Vincent (Dr. Patrick DeHeer is the director) – their pediatrics are substantial, saw a few pediatric matrixectomies there.
- DVA Baltimore with Sinai and Rubin (Dr. Hummira Abawi and Dr. Noman Siddiqui are the directors) have hands-on training with specialties in MIS, juvenile bunions, and pediatric congenital foot and ankle correction.
- Old Dominion University (previously EVMS)(Director is Dr. Richard Bruno) had moderate amounts of hands-on pediatric training through Dr. Bruno and Dr. Agnew (they have privileges at the Children’s Hospital there). I was able to see some pediatric flat foot reconstructions, juvenile bunion corrections, and matrixectomies. Dr. Agnew is very hands-on with his training as well and will allow the students to participate. He also sees children in his clinic.
- Cape Fear Valley (Dr. Kristen McGinness) had a lot of pediatrics in their clinic and some of the attendings there allow for hands-on participation for students.
- Christus St. Patrick (Dr. Tyson Green) is a comprehensive sports medicine program and is very heavy on surgery as well. Additionally, they had a lot of pediatrics in their clinic as they were the team physicians for multiple local high schools and for McNeese State University as well. I saw a lot of young athletes in their clinic and learned a lot about pediatrics during my time here. Would highly recommend this program for students interested in podopediatrics (though I will say it is not as hands on)!
- I also went to the TN VA (James H. Quillen) and they don’t really have any pediatrics-similarly to the Louis Stokes VA in Cleveland, and the Bay Pines VA in Florida. They get their numbers in pediatrics from local private practices or volunteering with local children’s events, such as Special Olympics.
- Cleveland Clinic is working on adding a rotation with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon for incoming residents who are interested in pediatrics.
- University of Cincinnati has been discussing the possibility of working with the Children’s Hospital for a rotation, as it is one of the best children’s hospitals in the country!
From other research I have done (I read through all of the CASPR listings to find pediatric exposure listed):
- Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center does an international mission trip with their Chief Residents to Honduras or Nicaragua.
- Creighton University has a pediatric orthopedic surgeon that their residents are able to work with and get some exposure to podopediatrics.
- Baylor Scott and White has a lot of podopediatric exposure and are known for it! They work with the McLane Children’s Hospital at Temple and Waco.
- Crozer-Chester is affiliated with Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics and their residents get their pediatrics numbers there, which is great exposure (I personally worked with the team at Rubin and they do very comprehensive pediatric congenital deformity correction).
- Detroit Medical Center lists on CASPR that their residents do a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery rotation.
- The DVA New Mexico does a pediatric orthopedics rotation during their second year at UNM Carrie Tingley Children’s Hospital and they do a private office rotation for clubfoot casting and billing.
- Emory University School of Medicine lists on their CASPR that they have medical mission trips available in the third year of training there.
- Geisinger Community Medical has a relative amount of pediatric exposure from what I have learned at our residency fair speaking with their residents, and also from an alumni who attends the ACFAP conference.
- HCA Florida Mercy Hospital and Barry University does medical missions.
- HCA Florida Westside Hospital has the opportunity for residents to do elective rotations in any field, so theoretically, one could elect to do time with a pediatrician, orthopedic pediatric surgeon, pediatric oncology, etc.
- Hennepin Healthcare gives clinical experience in clubfoot treatments (Ponseti technique) and clubfoot surgery at their hospital.
- Heritage Valley Beaver lists on their CASPR page that some of their clinical experience includes pediatric exposure and sports medicine.
- Inspira Medical Center Vineland sends their residents for a rotation at Rubin Orthopedic Institute in Baltimore for pediatric exposure.
- At Jackson North Medical Center, residents have the opportunity to participate in multiple yearly medical mission trips with the Yucatan Crippled Children’s Project.
- Kaiser Oakland has clubfoot and pediatric orthopedic and podiatry clinics.
- Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara has great pediatric orthopedic experience.
- OSF Saint Katharine Medical Center lists pediatric exposure on their CASPR page.
- Long Island Jewish at Northwell Health states that they do extensive training in
pediatric emergency medicine.
- Loyola places an emphasis on both pediatric and adult pathology.
- Metrowest Medical Center has a medical mission available for PGY 2 and 3, and clubfoot repair for one week (Operation Footprint in Honduras).
- Norton Audubon Hospital has a pediatric orthopedic rotation.
- Saint Anthony Medical Center has pediatric exposure listed on their CASPR page.
- Our Lady of the Lourdes Memorial Hospital has a rotation at Sinai in Maryland which is associated with Rubin and does a lot of pediatrics, so they may get some exposure through that connection.
- Roxborough Memorial Hospital has an affiliation with Rubin Orthopedic Institute as well.
- Swedish Medical Center Cherry Hill Campus has a Mexican Pediatrics Rotation and Pediatric Orthopedics Rotation (6 months).
- UnityPoint Health-Trinity Regional Medical Center has exposure to adult and pediatric reconstructive foot and ankle surgery.
- Wyckoff Heights Medical Center’s CASPR page states that they have a pediatric podiatry clinic/experience for residents.
